Maids & Men | Responsibilities of the Bridesmaids and Groomsmen

One of the first decisions engaged couples make is regarding who will be in their wedding party. In many cases, both the bride and groom have solid ideas of who they’d like standing beside them far before the proposal. They may be related, have grown up together, or roomed together in college, but there’s more than just the relationship involved when choosing members of your bridal party. The terms “bridesmaid” and “groomsman” aren’t just for great friends or siblings; these stand for the important roles these men and women will take on both during the engagement and on the wedding day. When choosing your bridal party, and specifically your Maid/Matron of Honor and Best Man, consider the responsibilities below.

Maid of Honor | The Maid of Honor is essentially the bride’s right hand, and thus has one of the most important roles in the wedding party. Throughout the planning process, she’s there to assist the bride with whatever she needs. On the day of the wedding, it’s the Maid of Honor’s primary responsibility to help the bride and keep her de-stressed. For this reason, she should be one of the bride’s closest friends or sisters and a woman with the ability to stay calm in high-stress situations.  The Maid of Honor’s responsibilities include:

  • Plans and hosts the bridal shower and bachelorette party (sometimes the Mother of Bride will assist with planning and paying for the bridal shower)
  • At the bridal shower, she records the list of gifts as well as who the bride should thank for each
  • Attends all pre-wedding events (engagement party, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, etc.)
  • Assists the bride in making items for the wedding (DIY favors, place cards, etc.)
  • Oversees the decorating of the ceremony and reception to ensure bride’s vision is implemented
  • Acts as liaison between vendors and the bride
  • Carries an emergency kit the day of the wedding
  • Holds the groom’s ring and bride’s bouquet and makes sure the bride’s train lays perfectly during the ceremony
  • Gives a speech and makes a toast at the reception
  • Makes sure the bride finds time to eat
  • Signs the marriage license as a witness

Bridesmaids | Traditionally, the bridesmaids are women who tend to the bride, however their role is huge throughout both the planning and the wedding day. Bridesmaids are typically some of the bride’s closest friends and/or family members. If the groom has sisters, they are sometimes asked to be bridesmaids. The Bridesmaids list of responsibilities include:

  • Assists the Maid of Honor in planning and paying for the bridal shower and bachelorette party
  • Be emotionally supportive and available to the bride
  • If possible, attend all pre-wedding events (engagement party, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, etc.)
  • Assists Maid of Honor throughout the wedding day
  • If possible, is available to assist the bride with making items for the wedding (DIY favors, place cards, etc.)
  • Is attentive to the wedding guests and encourages dancing among the guests

Best Man | The Best Man is most commonly a brother or best friend of the groom, however sometimes the father of the groom will act as the Best Man. Because his duties are just as important as the Maid of Honor’s, he should be responsible and reliable, as well as completely available to the groom throughout the engagement and wedding day. Like the Maid of Honor, his primary responsibility is to attend to the groom. The Best Man is responsible for:

  •  Plans the bachelor party
  • Attends all pre-wedding events (engagement party, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, etc.)
  • Assists the groom in choosing wedding attire
  • Oversees the groomsmen throughout the wedding day
  • Is emotionally supportive of the groom and keeps him calm
  • Holds the bride’s ring during the ceremony
  • Arranges transportation for the groom and groomsmen to the ceremony site
  • Gives the first speech and makes a toast at the reception
  • Signs the marriage license as a witness
  • Delivers the gifts and cards to the newlyweds’ home after the reception
  • Returns any rental suits/tuxedos the day after the wedding

Groomsmen | Groomsmen are responsible for providing support to the groom both in the days prior to the wedding and the wedding day itself. Similarly to the bridesmaids, the groomsmen are typically comprised of brothers and/or good friends. If the bride has any brothers, these are sometimes asked to be groomsmen. The Groomsmen’s responsibilities include:

  • Assists the Best Man in planning and paying for the bachelore party
  • Keeps the groom calm and de-stressed
  • If possible, attends all pre-wedding events (engagement party, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, etc.)
  • Assists Best Man throughout the wedding day
  • Assists in seating guests at the ceremony
  • Is attentive to the wedding guests and encourages dancing among the guests

Although the roles and responsibilities above are based on tradition, you can customize both to fit what you envision for your bridal party and wedding day. Each wedding, couple, and bridal party is unique, so feel free to deviate as necessary. When choosing your Maid of Honor and Best Man, consider their roles and choose someone who will not only stand by your side throughout the engagement, but that will fulfill the responsibilities above. You know your friends and family –  use them in the roles that best suit them and will provide you with your perfect wedding day!
